Adults may experience speech and language difficulties for a variety of reasons. TERRIO has Speech-Language Pathologists that evaluate, diagnose, and treat speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders.

Swallowing (dysphagia) Disorders:
| • | Coughing during or following eating/ drinking |
| • | Wet or gurgly-sounding voice during or following eating/ drinking |
| • | Additional effort or time needed to chew or swallow, especially during meals |
| • | Food or liquid leaking from the mouth or sticking to oral structures (i.e. tongue, teeth, roof of mouth, etc) |
| • | Recurrent pneumonia or chest congestion after eating |
| • | Weight loss or dehydration |
Dysarthria Disorders:
| • | Do you have slurred speech? |
| • | Do other people have a difficult time understanding you? |
| • | Do you have one-sided weakness in your face? |
Speech Disorder:
| • | Do you mispronounce words? |
| • | Do you distort sounds? |
Lisp (Interdental, Lateral, or Palatal):
| • | Do you frequently speak with your tongue out or between their teeth? (Interdental Lisp) |
| • | Do you make slushy sounds on the letters s, z, sh, ch, & zh -possible with other sounds as well? (Later Lisp) |
| • | Do you frequently speak with your tongue pressed against the top of their mouth? (Palatal Lisp) |
Cognitive Disorders:
| • | Do you have decreased attention, memory, or problem solving skills following a seizure, a stroke, or a brain injury and now? |
| • | Do you have difficulty recalling daily tasks that you have completed? |
| • | Do you difficulty balancing a checkbook? |
| • | Do you have difficulty making safe judgment calls throughout the day? |
| • | Do you have difficulty holding a conversation? |
Language Disorders (receptive & expressive):
| • | Do you have difficulty recalling words or sentences? |
| • | Do you what you want to say but just can’t say it? |
| • | Do you have difficulty understanding others? |
| • | Do you have difficulty with sentence structure? |
| • | Do you speak and wonder why others don’t understand you? |
| • | Do you have difficulty reading or writing? |
Apraxia of Speech (motor sequencing disorder):
| • | Do you have difficulty pronouncing multiple syllable words or sentences? |
| • | Do you switch around syllables in words? (i.e. banana may be nabana and then mabana) |
| • | Do you really have to work your tongue or lips to make certain sounds or words? |
Aphasia Disorders (due to a brain injury, stroke, or degenerative disease):
| • | Do you have difficult speaking, recalling, or formulating words? (Expressive Aphasia) |
| • | Do you have difficult understanding, following directions, answering questions, identifying common items? (Receptive Aphasia) |
Dysfluency (stuttering) Disorder:
| • | Do you repeat sounds, syllables, words, and/or phrases? |
| • | Do you exhibit sound prolongations or experience difficulty starting verbal expression? |
Hearing Impairments/ Cochlear Implants:
| • | Do you have hearing difficulties? |
| • | Do you speak differently or experience difficulty understanding language? |
Voice Disorders:
| • | Do you speak with a single tone, pitch, and volume? (Monotone) |
| • | Have you been diagnosed by an ENT or pulmonologist with a voice disorder or vocal cord dysfunction? |
| • | Do you sound hoarse or breathy? |
| • | Do you lose your breath while talking or do you frequently lose your voice? |
| • | Do you have inadequate breath support? |
